Untapped Trivia

 Our Story

Untapped Trivia formed as the brainchild of a few close friends with a passion for craft beer, cozy pub interiors, and gatherings of inquisitive folks querying the arcane corners of their minds for esoteric knowledge tidbits in lighthearted rivalry. Kicking off on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 3rd, 2016, the night was initially conceived as a small, bi-weekly event, but interest quickly grew and it settled into every Wednesday within a few months of conception. By the end of its first year, Untapped Trivia began incorporating themed events, tap-takeovers with local and national breweries, and fundraisers for local causes into the mix. Its crowd of attendees grew substantially, often having to schedule multiple evenings of individual events - having to borrow tables and seats from neighboring businesses - just to accommodate everyone. The more the merrier!

When the pandemic blindsided everyone in early 2020, the Untapped Trivia crew moved online and began hosting weekly virtual trivia nights in an attempt to keep the community together, and provide a social outlet for folks to stay connected - and hopefully stave off the ever-present threat of cabin fever. Since going virtual, weekly trivia friends and attendees have expanded to include individuals and households from all 50 states and over 8 different countries!

Untapped Trivia was nominated 4 years in a row for “best trivia in Portland” by Willamette Weekly’s Best Of Readers Poll, we’ve worked with over 73 breweries, local businesses, and national bands over the years Havemraised over $52,433 for local and national non-profits and charities, and (most importantly) cultivated a close-knit community of diverse, hilarious, whip-smart regulars and friends.

Untapped Craft Beer Fill House, unfortunately, closed its doors at the end of October 2020 (and will ALWAYS hold the title for best li’l Craft Beer Bar to ever exist. Objectively, and with no bias in opinion), but Untapped Trivia lives on!

 Our Trivia Hosts

Beau Bohanan

Our hostess with the mostest, and one of the original founders of Wednesday night trivia. Beau is a multidisciplinary graphic designer, event planner by trade, and can be found sharing his interesting, quirky and entertaining stories, factoids and more during every Untapped Trivia event. As is often said about his entire family: “Beau’s the kind of person who has never met a stranger.” Through his bubbly personality you’ll quickly discover his big heart for charitable organizations, joy for entertaining, and passion for his craft (he’s the glue that holds it all together)! Did we mention he loves puppies? (He’s a secret dog whisperer.) He’s also easily lured into vans where there’s a shiny wireless mic and a chance for attention, or especially if there’s an offer of the chance to meet Sandra Bullock.

Jens Irish

Jens spent his early years living between the United States and Norway before settling into the Colorado front range area at the dusk of his teenage years, where he studied Linguistics and Philosophy. The intent was to channel his burgeoning knowledge of obscure grammar trees and the deep, heavy questions of history (...Who am I? ...How am I? ...Am I an I because I query my am-ness?**) into a sprawling fantasy epic, heavily influenced by the stylings (and ramblings and wanderings) of Tolkien. He graduated in 2010, still working on that epic... albeit with the luxurious pacing of about one page a year, which is all the attention his ADHD brain allows for - the world being such a shiny place and all. Along the way he picked up a passion for climbing, had a brain aneurysm (full recovery, no biggie), and dabbled in the world of DJing, music production and event promotion on a semi-professional level, at one point holding a 5-year residency with the PUNCHIS DJ Collective at Beta Nightclub, ranked #1 club in the US by Rolling Stone his final year in the group.

In 2013 he was invited to play a series of shows between Oregon and Washington, and enjoyed the Pacific NW ambiance so much, he stuffed his belongings into the back of his Subaru and relocated to Portland a few months later. Since then he’s continued DJing, albeit on a more casual level, and settled initially into a career of craft cocktailing and bar management, before switching full time into the realm of craft beers a la Untapped Craft Beer Fill House (the frothy pints and hoppy sensibilities proved too tempting!) and its subsequent trivia nights, of which he finds himself primarily devoting his time toward, today!

** Best read using a voice channeling the voice of Denise Richards as Rebeccah Ann Leeman impersonating the voice of Alexandra Holden as Mary Johanson a la Drop Dead Gorgeous, for proper emotional affect. Or maybe just Stuart Smalley.
